Find Bed Bugs Before They Spread
Bed bugs are experts at hiding. In the early stages of an infestation there may be only a handful of bugs tucked inside a mattress seam, a baseboard crack or the frame of a couch, far too few for most people to spot. By the time bites, blood spots or live bugs appear, the problem has often spread to other rooms.
That is why Bugs Heat Terminator offers K9 bed bug detection in Toronto. Our detection dog is trained to recognize the scent of live bed bugs and viable eggs, so we can confirm whether you have an active infestation, pinpoint exactly where it is, and treat only what needs treating.
A K9 inspection is the right call when you have unexplained bites, after a guest or tenant complaint, before moving into a new home or condo, after bringing home second-hand furniture, and after treatment to confirm your space is bed bug-free.

How Do Bed Bug Detection Dogs Work?
A dog’s sense of smell is many thousands of times more sensitive than ours. Bed bugs give off a distinct odour, and a trained detection dog learns to recognize it while ignoring everything else in the room: food, pets, cleaning products and clutter.
During an inspection, our handler guides the dog methodically along beds, furniture, baseboards, closets, outlets and wall voids. When the dog detects bed bug odour, it gives a trained alert at the source. Because dogs respond to living bugs and eggs, they help separate a current infestation from old evidence such as dead bugs or stains.
Research published in the Journal of Economic Entomology found that trained dogs located live bed bugs and eggs with very high accuracy in controlled tests. In real homes, results depend on the training and experience of the dog-and-handler team, which is why our technicians always confirm every alert visually before recommending any treatment.

K9 Detection vs. Visual Inspection
A careful visual inspection is still an important part of our work, but on its own it has limits. Here is what a detection dog adds:
- Finds early infestations: dogs can pick up the scent of a few bugs or eggs before visible signs appear.
- Searches hidden spaces: wall voids, furniture joints, electronics and baseboards that are hard to check without taking things apart.
- Faster coverage: a dog can screen a room in minutes, which makes whole-home and multi-unit inspections practical.
- Targeted treatment: knowing exactly which rooms are affected means we treat only what is needed, saving you time and money.
- Confirms results: a follow-up K9 inspection after bed bug heat treatment helps confirm your home is clear.

K9 Bed Bug Detection FAQs – Toronto
1. Can the dog find bed bug eggs?
Yes. Detection dogs are trained on the scent of live bed bugs and viable eggs, so they can locate infestations that are too small or too well hidden to see.
2. Is a K9 inspection safe for my family and pets?
Yes. K9 detection is completely chemical-free. We only ask that your own pets stay in a separate room or outside during the inspection so our dog can work without distractions.
3. How long does an inspection take?
It depends on the size of the property. A typical apartment or house can usually be screened in under an hour, and larger buildings are inspected in sections.
4. How should I prepare for the inspection?
Leave rooms as they are: do not move furniture, bag belongings or spray any products beforehand. Avoid strong air fresheners or cleaners on the day of the visit, and make sure we can access every room.
5. What happens if the dog alerts?
Our technician confirms the alert visually and explains what was found. We then recommend the right solution, usually bed bug heat treatment, Aprehend® or a conventional treatment, and can schedule a follow-up K9 inspection to confirm the problem is gone.
6. Can I book a K9 inspection after treatment?
Yes. A post-treatment inspection, usually a few weeks after treatment, is a great way to confirm your home or business is bed bug-free.
